The Missouri Southern Women's Soccer team (1-2-0) struck for six goals on the night as they downed the visiting Rogers State Hillcats (0-3-0) 6-1 Thursday night at Hal Bodon Field.
The Lions got the scoring party started in the fourth minute as senior Karley Thomas put home a cross from sophomore Hannah Bomar, the Lions added a second goal just seconds later as Bomar's cross went off the Rogers State defender for an own goal for the early 2-0 lead. Junior Carly Cecil made it 3-0 Lions in the 32nd minute, as her shot trickled in after being deflected by the RSU goalkeeper. Bomar would get a goal of her own in the 36th minute on the assist from Thomas before Rogers State would get on the board in the 41st minute as Courtney Tucker buried a shot in the upper 90 off assists from Marlaina Trahant and Randye Sharp, before Southern went into halftime with the 4-1 lead.
The Lions opened the second half scoring in the 79th minute as freshmanBailey North belted an unassisted goal from the left side 20 yards out. Thomas added her second assist of the match as sophomore Hannah Cook got in on the goal scoring in the 81st minute to make the 6-1 final score.
Senior goalkeeper Shawnee Phillips played all 90 minutes in the net allowing just the one goal while recording four saves. Thomas led the Lions with five shots, two assists, and her one score. Bomar recorded three shots, two on goal, with one assist and one score, while Cecil, North, junior Kelly Sutton, freshman Addison Kingrey, and sophomore Anissa Williams all recorded two shots.
Southern will be back in action this Saturday, September 12 as they host the Newman University Jets. Kickoff for the non-conference match is scheduled for 3 pm from Hal Bodon Field.
