The Washburn Ichabods scored twice in the final four minutes, and the Missouri Southern football team nearly completed a last-second scoring drive before falling 27-21 at Washburn today inside Yaeger Stadium.
The Lions (1-3, 1-3 MIAA) trailed 13-7 at the half, but scored two third quarter touchdowns to go up 21-13. The Ichabods, however, scored twice in the final 3:44 of the game to go up 27-21 on the Lions.
Southern got the ball with 1:16 left in the game on its own 25-yard line to start the drive. The Lions got passes from TJ Fleeton to Jordan Morrison for ten, nine and eight yards to push the ball to the Washburn 48-yard line. A three-yard rush from Fleeton put the ball on the Ichabods' 45 yard line and the Lions called timeout with 22 seconds left.
Fleeton then completed a pass to Michael Nelson for 36 yards putting the ball at the Washburn nine-yard line. The Lions, however, couldn't complete the comeback and a last-second pass went just through the hands of Chad Nolan in the end zone.
Fleeton went 23-42 in the game for 239 yards and one touchdown. Will Gregory had 46 yards and a touchdown, while Giresse Forchu had 40 yards. Chad Nolan caught a pair of passes for 20 yards and a score, while Michael Nelson had six catches for 99 yards. Morrison had seven catches for 82 yards in the game.
Defensively, Jonquavious McBride led the team with ten tackles, while Justin Tomlinson had nine stops, six solo. EJ McKenzie had a pair of interceptions for a loss of 26 yards, while making eight stops, including two behind the line of scrimmage. Ricky Green had seven stops, six solo, including 2.5 for a loss and an interception.
The Lions will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Warrensburg to take on the Mules. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 pm.
