MSSU volleyball drops two in Arkansas Tech Tournament

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped the first two matches at the Arkansas Tech Tournament today, falling to Midwestern State in the opener and Ouachita Baptist in the night cap.

In the opener, Southern (0-6) came up short against Midwestern State (4-4). Individual set scores were 17-25, 20-25 and 19-25.

Southern struggled in the first set against MSU, hitting just .048, but the Lions rebounded in the second set to hit .238 with 14 kills and only four errors.

Bridgette Jaeger led the Lions against the Mustangs, picking up a double-double with ten kills and 11 digs. It is her third double-double of the season already. Monica White and Callie Whetstone hat seven kills each, while White hit .375 and added six blocks. Abby Finder dished out 16 assists and added ten digs, while Katie Wiele had a team-high 12 digs.

In the Lions' match against Ouachita Baptist (4-2), Southern ran into a good hitting team in the Tigers as OBU hit .210 in the match. Individual set scores wer 14-25, 22-25 and 22-25.

The first set was all OBU as the Tigers won 25-14. In the second set, Southern trailed 17-10 midway through the set, but the Lions mounted a comeback to get close. Lills from Lauren Darby and Payton Graves got the Lions to within five (19-14), and a block by Whetstone and Jaeger cut the lead to just three (23-20). An OBU error made the score 24-22, but that was as close as Southern would get.

In the third set, Southern trailed by five (21-15), but the Lions fought back and scored seven of the next eight points to tie the match at 22. OBU, however, scored the final three points and took the match.

Finder had 25 assists and 13 digs, her second double-double of the afternoon and third of the season. Graves had seven kills, while Whetstone added six kills and four blocks. Jaeger, White and Darby had five kills each. Wiele had a team-high 20 digs.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow with matches against Arkansas Tech and Newman.
