Missouri Southern men's basketball coach Jeff Boschee has announced the signing of Sean Choate as part of the NCAA early signing period today.
Choate, a 6-2, 170 pound guard, is a native of Denton, Texas where he prepped at Guyer High School. Choate had originally signed to play at the Naval Academy and spent the past semester at the Naval Academy Prep School. He will enroll at Southern in the Spring and will practice with the Lions, but will redshirt this season.
A four-year letter winner for coach Grant Long, Choate is the school's all-time leading scorer with more than 1,500 points in his career. He holds the school record for highest career scoring average at 23 points per game, while also holding the record for most three pointers made in a single season with 108. The three-point record also serves as a Texas 6A state record.
Choate was a second-team All-District as a sophomore, while earning District MVP honors as both a junior and a senior. He was an All-Area pick three times, while earning Offensive MVP honors as a junior and overall MVP honors as a senior. He was an All-Region pick as a junior and a senior.
At Guyer, Choate helped his team set the school record for wins in a season as a senior, while also helping the team to its first playoff appearance. He was also named the Guyer High School Male Athelte of the Year as a senior.
The son of Mike and Cyndi Choate, Sean is undecided on his future major at Southern.
"We are excited about adding Sean to our program," Boschee said. "We were disappointed when we lost out to the Naval Academy, but when we found out he was leaving the Academy, it was a no-brainer for us to sign him. Sean can really shoot the basketball and also has the ability to create a shot on his own. We recruited him hard our of high school and we feel very fortunate to get Sean the second time around."
