The Missouri Southern football team out gained visiting Fort Hays State 493-445 tonight, but the Tigers scored points when they needed and defeated the Lions 42-31 tonight on Senior Night at Fred G. Hughes Stadium inside the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex.
Southern (1-9, 1-9 MIAA) was led offensively by TJ Fleeton as the sophomore quarterback went 36-55 for 344 yards and two touchdowns, while gaining 36 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Will Gregory had 114 yards on the ground and a score. Carson Day had ten catches for 88 yards, while Gregory caught five passes for 56 yards out of the backfield. Chad Nolan had two touchdown passes on 35 yards, while Jordan Morrison caught five passes for 87 yards.
Hays (7-3, 7-3 MIAA) was led by the tandem of Shaquill Cooper and Treveon Albert. Albert threw for 257 yards on 13-23 and three touchdowns, while Cooper gained 99 yards and a score.
Defensively, the Lions were led by 14 tackles fromJohnquavious McBride. Kyjuan Tate had 10 stops, while Ryan Solomon had seven tackles and a sack. Michael Burks had an interception.
The Lions stopped the Tigers on their first possession, but on the first play from scrimmage on the ensuing Southern drive, a fumble was picked up by Hays and returned eight yards for a touchdown. A touchdown rush from Albert with 5:55 left in the first made the score 14-0, before a 19-yard field goal fromBrock Renken made the score at the end of the first 14-3.
Hays added another touchdown, this time from Cooper to go up 21-3, but a touchdown pass from Fleeton to Nolan made the score 21-10 and that is how the first half would end.
A fumble on the Lions' opening possession of the second half set up a FHSU scoring drive that resulted in Albert hitting Bilal Salat for 37 yards to go up 28-10. Another touchdown pass for Hays made it 35-10, before a Fleeton rushing touchdown near the end of the third quarter made the score 35-17.
Hays got its last score early in the fourth when Albert hit Cooper for a 29-yard score. The Lions tacked on two more scores, a 13-yard rushing score from Gregory and a ten-yard pass from Fleeton to Nolan to make the final tally.
Southern gained 344 yards in the air and 149 on the ground. The Lions had six more first downs (30-24) in the game than hays and time of possession was nearly equal.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend when Southern travels to St. Joseph to take on Missouri Western. Kickoff is slated for 11 am.
