The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell in straight sets tonight at Southwest Baptist, three to none. Individual set scores were 18-25, 24-26 and 23-25.
Southern (2-23, 1-13 MIAA) was led offensively by Bridgette Jaeger as she finished with ten kills, seven digs and two blocks.Monica White had seven kills and three blocks, while Callie Whetstone had five kills and five blocks. Abby Finder dished out 21 assists and added 12 digs, while Katie Wiele had a match-high 16 digs and Bradyn Wall added ten digs of her own.
SBU (4-21, 2-12 MIAA) had two in double-figures for digs, led by Payton White with 15.
Set one saw six tied scores and two lead changes. The Lions took a 10-8 lead midway through the set, but SBU scored six of the next seven points to lead 14-11. The lead was 19-13, forcing a Southern timeout and the Bearcats scored six of the final 11 points to take the set.
Set two saw nine tied scores and five lead changes. The Lions led 18-16 after an ace from Payton Graves and after SBU had gone up 23-19, Southern went on a 4-1 run to cut the lead to one (24-23) and force an SBU timeout. Southern tied the set at 24 on a block from Jaeger and Whetstone, but SBU scored the final two points of the set.
Set three was the tightest of the night. The Lions trailed 8-6 early on, but went ahead 11-9 midway through and led 16-15 forcing an SBU timeout. The set was tied at 21 and again at 22, but SBU scored three of the final four points to take the set and the match.
The Lions will be back in action this weekend, as Southern travels to Central Oklahoma on Friday and Pittsburg State on Saturday.
