Senior Sharese Jones led the Missouri Southern Lions (2-0) to a 71-68 victory in the final game of the MIAA/GAC Challenge hosted by Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Jones led all scorers with 24 as the Lions built an early lead and withstood a SWOSU (0-2) run for the 71-68 win Saturday evening at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. Junior Deb Holcomb added 22 points for Southern while sophomore Bri Shavers pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.
The first quarter would go back and forth like the opening round of a prize fight as each team answered the others' mini runs as both teams. Southwestern Oklahoma would have its first lead on the game's second possession as Hailey Tucker drilled a three pointer to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Southern answered back with a jumper from Shavers off the assist from senior Tami Morice and on the next possession took their first lead on a layup from Jones off the assist from senior Kenya Wilson-Brown. SWOSU would go on a mini 4-0 run to retake the lead at 8-4 before the Lions answered with a 6-0 run of their own, four points from Jones and two from Shavers. Sophomore Jenson Maydew drilled a three with 3:48 left in the quarter to put the Lions up four at 13-9. Following a pair of free throws from the Bulldogs Jones would drive the lane for a layup to push the lead back to four at 15-11 with 3:20 to play. Southwestern Oklahoma had another 4-0 run to tie the game at 15-15 before Maydew sank to charities to give the Lions another two point lead, 17-15, and Jones with another layup made it 19-15 with just over a min left in the quarter. SWOSU however, would close the quarter on a 5-0 run on a jumper and three pointer from Jade Jones to take a one point lead, 20-19, into the quarter break.
SWOSU would open their lead to three, 22-19, on another jumper from Jones just eight seconds into the second quarter. From there the Lions would take over the second as they held the Bulldogs to just six points. A 16-2 run over the first six minutes of the quarter would give Southern a 35-24 lead with 3:37 to play in the half. Sharese Jones scored 10 of those 16 for the Lions while Holcomb added four, and Shavers two. SWOSU got the lead back to single digits at the at 2:11 mark on a jumper from Hayden Priddy before sophomore Dru Clarkwould send the Lions into halftime with a three that just beat the buzzer for a 38-26 lead.
In the first half Jones finished with 20 points, Shavers added six points to go with her six rebounds and Holcomb added four points and three rebounds. Southern shot 40 percent (14-for-35) from the field including 4-for-9 from three point range and were a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Southwestern Oklahoma was led by Jade Jones with 12 points and five rebounds. They shot 36.0 percent (9-for-25) from the field including 4-for-12 from three point range and were 4-for-6 from the free throw line.
The third quarter started much like the first half ended as the Lions pushed their lead up to 17, 43-26, after a lay-up from Jones and a three pointer from Holcomb. From there the Bulldogs slowly chipped away at Southern's lead, a 6-2 run would get the lead back to 13 at 45-32 with just under seven and a half minutes to play in the quarter before a three from Morice would push the Lions' lead back to 16. Over the next four minutes SWOSU would go on an 10-0 run to get the lead down to single digits again at 48-42 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. A layup from Holcomb would stop that run before another 6-0 run by Southwestern Oklahoma finished out the quarter to bring the Bulldogs within two at 50-48.
SWOSU tied the game on the first possession in the fourth as Morgan Vogt drove the lane for a layup and a jumper from Janae Coffee gave SWOSU their first lead since the start of the second quarter. Holcomb nailed a jumper just 13 seconds later to give the game it's fourth tie at 52-52. SWOSU regained the lead again off a Vogt free throw and pushed the lead to four on a Jade Jones three pointer. Morice answered right back for the Lions as she dialed it up from long distance and a pair of free throws from Jones would give Southern a 57-56 lead with six minutes to play. Hailey Tucker's pair of free throws with 5:19 on the clock gave what SWOSU thought would be the lead for good at 60-57 and the Bulldogs pushed the lead up to six, 64-58, on a layup from a cutting Tucker with 3:26 left. Holcomb would nail a three pointer to cut the lead in half with 3:13 left followed by a layup from Jade Jones to put SWOSU back up by five, 66-61. A pair of free throws from sophomore Jordan Dinyer would get the lead back to three at 66-63 with just over two minutes to play and another three from Holcomb tied the game at 66-66 with just over 1:30 to play. The Bulldogs would regain the lead on the next possession as Janae Coffee put in her own miss before Holcomb would drain yet another three pointer to give the Lions a 69-68 lead. Holcomb would find Shavers for a layup with 15 seconds left to give Southern the 71-68 win.
Jones finished 9-for-17 from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line while Holcomb went 9-for-20 from the floor, but shot 50 percent (4-for-8) from downtown. Shavers narrowly missed her first double-double for the Lions as she pulled down 11 rebounds to go with her eight points. As a team Southern finished 37.3 percent shooting from the field including a 10-for-24 performance from three point range and were 11-for-12 from the free throw line.
SWOSU was led by Jade Jones with 23 points and nine rebounds with Tucker adding 16 points and Coffee with 12. Jones also narrowly missed a double-double as she led the Bulldogs in rebounds with nine and Coffee pulled down six. On the night SWOSU finished 25-for-57 (43.9 percent) from the floor including a 6-for-18 performance from three point range to go along with 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from the free throw line.
Southern will be back in action on Wednesday, November 18 as they host Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference member Minnesota State-Mankato.
