The Missouri Southern basketball team led by nine at the half and held on for a 94-85 win over 24th ranked Arkansas-Fort Smith tonight.
Southern (2-1) wins for the fifth time in the series against UAFS (2-1). MSSU was led offensively by Taevaunn Prince with 24 points and nine rebounds on the night. He shot 9-14 from the field and 6-8 from the free-throw line. Austin Wrightscored 17 points on 7-12 shooting and 3-7 from long range, while Blaine Miller had 14 points on 5-8 and 3-5 from three-point land. Brady Petry had nine points and six rebounds off the bench, while Charlie Brown and DJ Feitl had eight points each.
Fort Smith (2-1) was led by 21 points from Seth Youngblood and Alex Cooper. Dusan Stojanovic scored 17 points and added ten rebounds.
UAFS opened up an eight point lead (10-2) after a layup from Cooper with 17:39 left in the first half, but Southern went on an 11-2 run to go up 13-12 after a jumper from Wright with 14:29 left in the first half. A jumper from Bruce Marshall with 13:16 left in the half gave Southern an 18-17 lead that they would not relinquish. A jumper from Wright ith 1:45 left to go in the half made the Southern lead 12 (47-35) and MSSU led 49-40 at the break.
A three-pointer from Brady Petry with 9:26 to go in the second half gave Southern a 19-point lead (76-57) and a three from Wright with 8:37 left to go gave MSSU its largest lead (20) at 79-59. UAFS cut the Southern lead to just six (91-85) with 24 seconds to go, but that would be as close as they would get.
Southern shot 53 percent from the field and 57 percent from long-range. They shot 63 percent from the free-throw line. Southern out rebounded UAFS 38-35, including 12-11 on the offensive boards where Southern had a 19-7 advantage on second-chance points. After scoring just 15 bench points all weekend, the Southern bench scored 34 tonight, outscoring UAFS 34-12.
Southern will be back in action this Saturday when the Lions travel to William Jewell for a 3 pm tip off.
