Charlie Brown hits career-high 27 as MSSU wins opener

Missouri Southern sophomore Charlie Brownhad a career-high 27 points as the Lions basketball team took out visiting St. Cloud State 95-79 tonight in front of nearly 1,700 fans as part of the MIAA/NSIC Challenge in both team's season opener.

The Lions (1-0) were led by Brown's 10-14 performance from the field. The Joplin native went 0-3 to start the game and finished 10-11, including 3-3 from the three-point line and 4-5 from the charity stripe. Austin Wright and Taevaunn Princehad 20 points each as Wright went 4-8 from long range and Prince added nine rebounds. DJ Feitl had 18 points on a near-perfect performance going 5-5 from th field, 2-2 from long-range and 6-8 from the free-throw line. Isaac Kreuer had nine points and four rebounds, while Vince Fritz had a point andBrady Petry had seven boards.

St. Cloud (0-1) was led by Gage Davis with 22 points, while Eddie Alcantara scored 18 and Scottie Stone had ten.

Southern opened up a 14-5 lead early on after a layup from Feitl at the 15:36 mark of the first half. The Huskies, however, stormed back and took a 20-19 lead after a three from Alcantara at the 11:12 mark. SCSU led 27-24 with 7:17 to play, before Brown took the game into his own hands.

Brown converted a three point play to tie the score at 27 and then the next trip down scored on a jumper to give the Loions a 29-27 lead they would not give up. Brown scored 12 points in that stretch to put Southern up 36-32 at the under five media timeout. A layup from Prince, and a pair of three's from Brown then put the Lions up by 12 (44-32) with 2:45 left in the half. The Lions led by 11 at the break.

A three from Prince early on in the second half gave Southern a 14-point lead, but a three from the Huskies' Stone cut the lead to just six at 52-46. A 10-3 run by the Lions capped off by a three from Wright gave Southern a 13 point lead with 14:37 to go, and a pair of freebies from Prince with 11:55 to go gave Southern its biggest lead of the night, 18 (69-51).

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow evening as Southern plays host to Minnesota State - Mankato. Tip off from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 5 pm.
