The 14th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team lost its first game of the season today as Missouri S&T scored a late run to take out the Lions 6-5 from S&T Baseball Field in Rolla.
Southern (12-1) went down 3-0 after two innings, but the Lions scored three runs in the top of the third to tie the game at three.
The big hit of the inning came when Logan Moon had a bases-clearing triple to score Mitchel Osburn, Jared Lupo and Matt Smith.
The Miners (4-6) answered and scored two more in the bottom half of the inning to go back up 5-3.
Southern scored a single run in each of the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game at five. Moon drove in Osburn for his fourth RBI of the game in the fifth and Robbe Ewing drove in Lupo in the seventh.
S&T, however, answered back and scored a run in the seventh when Adam Richter drove in Lance Portwood for the go-ahead run.
Matt Harvey started for the Lions and went six innings, striking out one and scattering five hits, while allowing four earned runs. Nathan Strobel went an inning and two thirds and took the loss, while Stephen Vaughnthrew the final out of the eighth.
Osburn went 3-5 and scored a run, while Moon was 2-4 with four runs driven in. Ewing drove in a run, while Lupo scored three runs of his own.
The Lions will be back in action this weekend as Southern will play host to Emporia State in a four-game series at Joe Becker Stadium. The Lions and Hornets will face off on Friday at 3 pm with a single, nine-inning game, play two seven-inning games on Saturday at 1 pm, and finish off the series with a nine-inning game at noon on Sunday.
