Missouri Southern senior forward Slim Magee tied an MIAA Tournament record with 20 rebounds as the Lions won 87-79 over Nebraska-Kearney in the quarterfinals of the 2014 MIAA Basketball tournament inside Municipal Auditorium.
Magee scored 24 points and tied an MIAA Tournament record with 20 rebounds as the Lions (22-5) went on a 19-10 run to end the game. The 20 rebounds ties Jeff Hutcheon of Northwest Missouri (1987) and Andy Berlin of Washburn (1995) for the most in a single game. Magee went 10-12 from the field and 4-5 from the free-throw line. The 20 rebounds is a career-high for Magee breaking his previous of 18 set this season against Lindenwood.
Marquis Addison scored 20 points and added six rebounds, while Lane Barlow scored 13 and dished out seven assists. Jordan Talbert had 11 points and five assists to go with five blocks in the game.
UNK (15-13) was led by 27 points from Mike Dentlinger on 10-18 from the field. Connor Beranek scored 18 and Ethan Brozek had 14 with 10 rebounds.
Southern jumped out to an 11-4 lead after a three pointer from Talbert at the 16:10 mark of the first half. A layup from Beranek with 11:28 left in the half tied the game at 15 and a dunk from Beranek with 10:51 left in the half gave the Lopers a 20-15 lead. The UNK lead would be seven (28-21) after a layup from Brozek, but a three from Austin Wright capped a 7-0 run by the Lions that tied the game at 28 with 6:47 left in the half. Both teams traded baskets to round out the half and the Lopers led 39-38 at the break.
The game was tied at 57 after a dunk from Beranek with 11:39 left in the second half and the Lopers led by five (62-57) after a layup from Dentlinger with 9:26 to go. The Lions led by two (68-66) after a three from Blaine Millerwith 6:12 to go, but a three on the other end by Beranek gave the Lopers the lead right back. That would be the last lead UNK would see as back-to-back layups from Magee and a pair of freebies from the big man capped off a 6-0 run by Slim and the Lions led 74-69 with 4:49 left. The Lions' lead would be its largest (13) after a layup from Barlow with just over a minute to go made the score 85-72.
Southern shot 51 percent from the field and 73 percent from the free-throw line. The Lions had 19 assists on 32 made baskets and 13 offensive rebounds led to 17 second-chance points. Southern had a 42-33 advantage on the boards and the Lions' bench outscored the Lopers 16-10.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday evening as Southern will face off with Northwest Missouri in an 8:15 pm semifinal game.
