Southern softball squad loses conference opener

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

he Missouri Southern Lions softball team opened up MIAA action this afternoon at Central Oklahoma dropping a pair of games to the Bronchos falling 8-0 in five innings in game one and 6-1 in game two at Edmond North High School.
The Lions (6-12, 0-2 MIAA) were only able to collect seven hits as the Bronchos (15-7, 6-0) stymied the Lions offense with a pair of great pitching performance. Dawn Grass collected a hit in each contest in each game as five other Lions collected one hit each on the day.
Game one saw UCO's Kalynn Schrock allow only three hits and strike out 11 Lions as Southern was unable to plate any runs. The best opportunity for the Lions came in the first inning as Chloe Brown drew a one-out walk, moved to second on single by Grass, and after Alexah Replogle was hit by a pitch to load up the bases, Schrock got Southern's Shelby Romines to fly out to left field to end the threat. The Bronchos got a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI groundout and then added seven in the third to take a commanding 8-0 lead and held on for the five inning victory. Replogle got her first start on the year, pitching two innings and allowing five earned runs to take the loss.
Southern was able to get on the scoreboard in game two as Romines hit a one-out solo home run in the seventh, her first of the season, but unfortunately it came after the Bronchos had built a 6-0 lead. UCO scored one run in the fourth, added two in the fifth and three more in the sixth to give the home team a comfortable margin. Haley Kinnison pitched all six innings of game two allowing six earned runs and struck out two. UCO's Nicole Brady pitched all seven innings as she shut down Southern only allowing four hits, one walk and struck out one.
Southern returns to action on Saturday traveling to Northeastern State to take on the RiverHawks (17-7, 5-1) in a doubleheader at RiverHawks Park starting at 9:30 a.m.
