Missouri Southern head football coach Daryl Daye has announced the addition of three assistant coaches to his football staff.
Joining the Lions this year will be Charles Alexander (Defensive Backs/Recruiting Coordinator), Charlie Hopkins (Offensive Line) and Frank Wilson (Cornerbacks).
Alexander comes to Missouri Southern after two seasons at Division II East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. He spent two seasons at ESU where he coached the defensive line. In 2013, the Warriors' defensive line recorded 75 tackles for a loss of 300 yards. They had 32 sacks for 190 yards lost and the team had 12 fumble recoveries for a loss of 43 yards with 14 quarterback hurries.
In his first season at ESU, the Warriors led the PSAC and were tied for ninth in NCAA Division II with 3.0 sacks per game (30 in 10 games). Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Bryan Thomson was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year, was a consensus first team All-Region selection and named to the Football Gazette All-America third team. Prior to ESU, Alexander spent seven seasons coaching at Lehigh, Gettysburg, Villanova and Clarion. A native of Newark, Ohio, Alexander was an All-Region tight end before playing two years at Butler University in Indianapolis. He transferred to Ohio State University, where he earned a bachelor's in Education while majoring in Sport and Leisure Studies in 2002. He earned his Master's degree in Education from Clarion in 2006.
Hopkins comes to Missouri Southern after a season at Division II Brevard College in North Carolina. He spent a season on the staff at Brevard where he was the offensive line coach. The Tornados rushed for nearly 3,000 yards under Hopkins leadership and averaged 4.6 per carry.
Prior to Brevard, Hopkins spent two seasons as the Assistant Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line coach at Division III Hamline University in Minnesota. He also served as the Recruiting Coordinator and Video Coordinator during his tenure with Hamline. Hopkins was a four-year letterman as an offensive lineman at Georgia Southern, where he was a member of an offensive line that led the nation in rushing in five consecutive seasons. Hopkins was also a member of three Southern Conference Championship teams (2001, 2002, 2004). He graduated from Georgia Southern in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in Video Production and Broadcasting.
Wilson comes to Southern after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. While at ESSU, the Warriors produced the conference leader in both interceptions and pass break-ups this past season. He was on the coaching staff with current MSSU coach Charles Alexander.
Wilson is a 2006 graduate of Dayton University where he was a four-year member of the football team for the Flyers, starting one season. The team won the 1-AAA national title in 2002 and during his four years had just seven losses.
"I'm very excited to add these three quality individuals to our coaching staff," Daye said. "Each of them are highly talented and excellent football coaches and I'm looking forward to having them on the sidelines.
