Behind a two-hit shutout from sophomore pitcher Haley Kinnison, the Missouri Southern softball team split a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon at Missouri S&T. The Lady Miners won game one 2-0 before the Lions took game two 2-0 as Kathryn Goins hit a two-run home run and Kinnison only allowed two hits.
The Lions (5-9) got off to a slow start in game one as they only picked up three hits in the contest. Collecting one hit each in the first, second and fourth innings, the Lions best chance to score came in the fourth when they put runners on first and second with one out, but Brooke Swadley flew out to the left fielder and Dawn Grass was forced out at third base to end the threat. Missouri S&T (3-6) picked up their two runs in the first and second innings off a sacrifice fly in the first and a solo home run in the second. Sarah Williams pitched all six innings of game one as she was the hard luck loser allowing only six hits and two earned runs to drop her record to 2-2 on the year.
Southern was able to find more offense in game two as they racked up eight hits as left fielder Chloe Brown and Goins each went 2-for-3 from the plate. After a scoreless first inning, the Lions scored their only two runs of the day in the frame as right fielder Shelby Romines led off the inning with a single to right center. After third basemanBrooklyn Farrell lined out to shortstop, Goins homered to left center for her second home run of the season.
Pitching a no-hitter through the first five innings, Kinnison allowed a hit in both the sixth and seventh, but that was all the Lady Miners were able to muster as Kinnison picked up her third win of the year and first shutout.
Southern returns to action at home tomorrow as they host St. Joseph (Ind.) (5-7, 3-1 GLVC) at 4 p.m. at Lea Kungle Field.
