The Missouri Southern softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader this evening to rival Pittsburg State in the Sonic Trophy Series at Lea Kungle Field. The Lions fell 9-1 in game one and 10-3 in game two.
The Lions (4-8) were led on the day by sophomore shortstop Michala Wood who went 5-for-8 from the plate with a double, scored a run and drove in a run. Dawn Grass and Jessica Castoe also collected two hits as Grass registered a double and an RBI.
Pittsburg State 9, Missouri Southern 1
The Gorillas (11-4) got the scoring started in the first inning on a RBI single to center. Pitt State added three runs in the third and tacked on one more in the fifth before the Lions got on the board in the bottom of the frame asBrooke Swadley led off the inning with a hit by pitch. After she moved to second base on a groundout by Kathryn Goins, she stole third and then came around to score fielder's choice from Wood.

The Gorillas added an unearned run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take game one by a final 9-1.Haley Kinnison started in the circle pitching 2.2 innings giving up five hits and four runs. She was chased from the game in the third and gave way to Shelby Mitchell for 2.1 innings. Sarah Williams finished the game up pitching the final two innings.
Pittsburg State 10, Missouri Southern 3
The second game saw the Lions get on the scoreboard much quicker as they scored runs in both the first and second innings as Wood scored on a run on a fielder's choice by Shelby Romines in the first and Wood drove in Castoe and then scored on a Gorilla throwing error. With the scored tied 2-2 after two innings, the Gorillas added three runs in the third, hit a two-run home run in the fourth and added three more in the fifth to make it a 10-2 lead.
Grass hit a RBI double to center plating Chloe Brown from third. Mitchell started her third game of the year as she took the loss throwing 2.2 innings surrendering five hits, but only one earned run. Kinnison and Williams combined to throw the final 4.1 innings striking out four batters.
The Lions are back in action on Tuesday playing a non-conference doubleheader at GLVC member Missouri-Rolla starting at 1:30 p.m.
