The Missouri Southern Softball team (9-27, 4-10 MIAA) dropped a pair of heart-breakers to State Farm Trophy Series Rival Pittsburg State (25-11, 14-2 MIAA) Monday evening at Lea Kungle Field 1-0 and 6-4.
Game One
Pitt State struck early as they loaded the bases with no outs but only managed one run on a RBI single from Devon McCreath. That would be all PSU needed as Emmie Roberts held Southern to just four hits, all singles, as the Gorillas won game one 1-0.
Southern had a chance in the fourth as Alana Hester lead off with a single just over the shortstop's reach andAbi Corbett reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Hester due to a fielding error by the ss. Myranda Stewart then grounded out to the first baseman and Hester was thrown out at home as Corbett was gunned down at third for a triple play and to end the Lions' threat.
Ashley Lutz (5-12) went the distance for the Lions allowing just the one run, earned, on eight hits to go with seven strike outs.
Game Two
The night cap saw PSU strike first again this time off an RBI double to right center that scored Ashton Pratt. The Lions would answer back in the home half as Sydney Blue led things off with a walk. Following a fielder's choice by Hester, Corbett got an infield single off a bunt to third base as Hester advanced to third on a wild throw by the PSU third baseman. Corbett stole second during the next at bat before Stewart walked to load the bases with one out. Kathryn Goins-Osburn singled home Hester. Michala Wood hustled out an infield single that scored Corbett and Stewart scored on another errant throw by the Gorilla third baseman.
PSU would get one run back in the top of the fourth to make it 3-2 before the Lions would tack on another run as Hester came up with a one out single up the middle then stole second and scored on a fielding error by the PSU second baseman for the 4-2 lead.
Pitt State would leave two runners stranded in the sixth before getting to the Lions starter in the seventh as they came up with four runs on five hits to steal a 6-4 win.
Kali' Hodson (1-12) went six innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on nine hits. Lutz coming in relief with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh gave up one run, earned, on two hits.
On The Day
Both Swadley and Stewart finished the day 2-for-6 (.333) to lead the Lions at the plate. Swadley also finished with the lone extra base hit, a double, and a .500 slugging percentage for Southern. Hester and Corbett also swiped the only two stolen bases on the day for either team.
Next Up
The Lions will head to Springfield on Tuesday evening to play a non-conference double header against Drury at Thompson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm.
