MSSU baseball takes doubleheader from Lincoln

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The 17th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team swept a double-header from visiting Lincoln University today, winning 7-0 in game one and 10-0 in the nightcap.

The Lions (30-9, 21-5 MIAA) got superb pitching from both Cody Hutchinson and Payton Walker, as well as a perfect day at the plate from Jacob Bryant.

Hutchinson went the distance in game one, striking out five and allowing just four hits in the complete-game shutout.

The Lions scored two in the second inning on a Bryant single and an RBI from Mitchell Osburn. Another two crossed the plate in the fourth from an RBI double from Jon Davis and an RBI single from Richie Gorski.

Bryant added a three-run home run in the fifth to push the score to 7-0.

Bryant went 2-2 in the game with three driven in and three runs scored. Tee Helsel went 2-2 with two runs scored, while Davis went 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Jesse Rall went 1-2 with a run scored, while Gorski had a hit and an RBI.

Walker was masterful in game two. The junior allowed just one hit, an infield single in the second, and he promptly picked the runner off. He went on to throw a perfect final five innings. He struck out eight and walked none, while allowing that one hit.

The Lions pushed across a run in the second when Axel Johnson tripled to start the inning and he scored on an RBI single from Robbe Ewing. Southern added two runs in the fourth on RBIs from Gorski and Chris Hoffman.

Another run crossed in the fifth on a Bryant RBI single, and the Lions pushed across six runs in the sixth to blow the game open.

Bryant went 4-4 in the game, with two runs and two RBIs. Chris Hoffman went 4-5 with a run and an RBI, while Gorski and Rall had two hits each. Helsel and Johnson scored twice, while Hffman, Rall, Ewing and Osburn scored a run each.

The Lions and Blue Tigers will be back at it tomorrow afternoon with a single, nine-inning game beginning at 1 pm.
