The 19th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team completed the sweep of visiting Washburn today, defeating the Ichabods 4-1 in the series finale in front of a big crowd on Military Appreciation Day.
The Lions (26-6, 17-3 MIAA) saw a superb pitching performance from starter Matt Harvey as the sophomore went eight innings, striking out five and walking just one, while scattering four hits and allowing just one run.
Washburn (21-12, 14-10 MIAA) picked up its lone run in the second when catcher David Gauntt took a Harvey pitch over the wall in left field to put the Ichabods up 1-0 early.
The Lions, however, would battle back and would get to Washburn starter Maustin Otterstatter in the fourth, scoring three runs. Richie Gorski started things off with a double down the left field line and he scored on an RBI single from Chris Hoffman. Jon Davis singled and Tee Helsel walked before Axel Johnson drove them both home with a double off the centerfield wall.
The Lions added another run in the sixth on a home run from Jesse Rall to left center.
Southern had single hits from Gorski, Hoffman, Rall, Davis and Johnson, with Gorski, Rall, Davis and Helsel scoring one run each.
Nick Pettus threw a perfect ninth, striking out one and earning save No. 1 on the season. Harvey moved his record to 3-2.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as Southern travels to Bolivar to take on Southwest Baptist in a non-league game. First pitch is slated for 3 pm.
