The Missouri Southern athletics department announced its year-end award winners tonight as part of the 2014 Missouri Southern Student-Athlete Banquet held at the Billingsly Student Center Ballroom.
Women's track and field athlete Kylie Cornman was named the EO & Virginia Humphrey Award winner, the highest honor bestowed to a student-athlete at MSSU. Men's basketball player Marquis Addison was the Male Athlete of the Year winner, while women's track and field athlete Amber White was named the Female Athlete of the Year.
Other finalists for the Humphrey Award were Dawn Grass from softball, Jeff Fraley from men's track and field and Jordan Talbert from men's basketball. Other finalists for the Male Athlete of the Year award Eric Schott from men's track and field and Jay McDowell from football. Other finalists for the Female Athlete of the Year award were Grass and Cornman.
Cornman was the indoor shot put champion at the 2014 MIAA Indoor Championships this year and the runner-up at this past weekend's outdoor meet. She currently ranks 10th nationally in Division II and has automatically qualified for the shot put at this year's outdoor championships. She was an All-American in 2013 and has been a two-time MIAA champion, as well as a four-time All-MIAA honoree.
Off the field of play, Cornman is a three-year member of the Student-Athelte Advisory Committee at MSSU, as well as a winner of the 2014 MSSU Glen Dolence Leadership award. She has served as a Kinesiology Club officer the past two years and is a two-time winner of the MSSU Athletics Service Award donating countless hours to numerous efforts.
Addison helped the Lions to the 2014 MIAA Basketball Tournament Championship this year, as well as the third appearance in four years in the NCAA Tournament. He was a first-team All-MIAA selection and was also named All-Region and participated in the Reeses' Division II All-Star Game this year. He finishes his career at Missouri Southern as the fifth-leading scorer in school history and ranks second in all-time free-throw shooting at .836. He also ranks fourth in career steals and scored in dobule-figures in all but two games this season.
White has come on strong this year for the Lions. She was an indoor All-American in the 400m this year, winning that event at the 2014 MIAA Indoor Championships. She was also an All-Region selection in the indoor season, while helping the 4x400m relay team to break a school record. Individually, she has broken the MSSU 400m outdoor record, one that had stood for 22 years, twice this season and has provisionally qualified for outdoor nationals in the 200m, 400m and the triple jump.
