MSSU softball splits doubleheader with Washburn

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern Lions (7-21, 2-4 MIAA) split a pair of MIAA games Friday afternoon with the Washburn Ichabods (18-11, 6-4 MIAA) in Topeka, Kansas.

Game One

All of Southern's offense in game one came in the fourth inning as Myranda Stewart got the inning started by reaching base on a WU error. Following a line out by Kathryn Goins-Osburn, Brooke Swadley walked and Dru Coleman loaded the bases with a single down the right field line. On the very next pitch Sarah Williams sent a shot over the center field fence for her second home run of the season.

Washburn got to the Lions starter, Ashley Lutz early and chased her off as they put up a seven spot on a three run home run and a grand slam with no outs. Shelby Mitchell came in relief going four and two thirds innings allowing seven runs, four earned, on 11 hits with four strikeouts.

Game Two

The night cap started off the opposite way as the Lions struck first. Stewart got a two out walk before Goins-Osburn hit a 2-0 pitch for her third home run of the season. Southern would add three more runs in the fourth via the long ball, as Lindsey Gorham got in on the act sending the three run shot over the center field fence.

The Ichabods mounted a seventh inning rally that saw they push three runs across the plate but the rally came up just short as Lutz got Martseller to strike out swinging to end the game.

On The Day

Coleman led the offensive attack going 2-for-4 at the dish with two runs scored and a walk. Williams finished .333 on the day (1-for-3) with two runs scored, the grand slam, four RBIs and two walks.

Lutz (5-8) got both decisions on the day going the distance in game two. Lutz pitched a total of seven innings allowing eight runs, all earned, on nine hits with six strike outs.

Up Next

The Lions will travel to 11th ranked Emporia State Saturday for a MIAA double dip with first pitch scheduled for 1pm.
