MSSU golf finishes third

The Missouri Southern Lions held their own in Tuesday's final round as they finished third behind Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri.

The Lions finished one shot back of the two MIAA schools on day two with a 311, for the tournament the Lions finished with a 605 just four strokes back of second place Central Missouri. Southern finished ahead of MIAA schools Washburn (617), Missouri Western (618), Northeastern State (622), Fort Hays State (636), Southwest Baptist (660), and Lincoln (671).

"The guys battled well today in conditions that were considered by UCO's #1 player as the most difficult he had ever seen at Gaillardia Country Club, UCO's home course. Although we came up a little short of a overall win, our 3rd place finish was significant in our effort toward a regional berth," said head coach Mike Wheeler.

Sophomore Taylor Lansford was the Lions top finisher as he carded a two day total of 149 (71-78) to tie for tenth place. Sophomore Trae Fairchild finished tied for 15th with a two day total of 150 (76-74), Fairchild was one of the biggest movers on day two as he moved up 21 spots with his 2-over 74. Senior Ryan Buerk finished with a two day total of 152 (74-78) and tied for 28th. Freshman Chas Goines finished in a tie for 34th to give the Lions four individuals in the top 40 places, with a two round total of 154 (73-81). Freshman Connor Neil finished with a two day total of 161 (77-84) while sophomore Phillip Roller, competing as an individual, finished with a two day 166 (82-84).

Lansford finished tied with NCAA D-I Oklahoma State's Stratton Nolen at 5-over par for the tournament.

The Lions will take a break until April 13 and 14 when they travel to Topeka, Kansas to take part in the Washburn Invite at the Topeka Country Club. The WU Invite is the only spring MIAA points event before the conference tournament the following week at the Alvamar Country Club in Lawerence, Kansas.
