Missouri Southern junior right-hander Cody Hutchinson threw a complete game, the third of the weekend, and the Lions' baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Fort Hays, winning the finale today, 8-5 at Larks Park.
Southern (15-1, 8-0 MIAA) picked up a gem from Hutchinson as the junior went the distance for win number four of the season (4-0). He scattered eight hits and struck out ten, while walking just two and throwing 137 pitches.
The Lions started the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning on RBIs from Jon Davis, Chris Hoffmanand Richie Gorski.
Hays (3-13, 3-9 MIAA) answered with two runs in the first and a two-run home run from Alex King in the second put the Tigers on top 4-3.
Both pitchers settled down and held each squad scoreless over the next three innings, before Axel Johnson hit an opposite-field home run in the sixth to tie the game.
Rall drove in Hoffman and Davis to put the Lions on top 6-4 and RBIs from Tee Helsel and Brett Graham gave the Lions an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the 8th.
The Tigers added another run in the eighth, but Hutchinson sent the Tigers down in order in the ninth to seal the win.
Hoffman, Davis, Johnson and Gorski all had two hits, with Davis, Hoffman and Johnson scoring twice each. Rall drove in two, while Davis, Hoffman, Johnson, Gorski, Helsel and Graham drove in a run each.
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon, playing host to College of the Ozarks in a single, nine-inning game. First pitch from the MSSU Baseball Field is slated for 2 pm.
