MSSU softball splits doubleheader with Drury

 The Missouri Southern Lions Softball team (3-15, 1-3 MIAA) split a pair of games Tuesday evening with Drury (8-10, 1-3 GLVC) winning 5-4 before dropping the night cap 3-0 at Lea Kungle Field at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex.
Game one
In the opener Drury struck first scoring in the top half of the first as Weissenbach singled up the middle to score Hillenburg who led off the game with a single through the left side. Southern would get that run back in the fourth as Myranda Stewart got things started with a one out single to right and then scored on Brooke Swadley's single to left field two batters later.
In the very next half inning Drury would go back up as they scored three runs off three hits, two wild pitches, and a walk. Southern would come back with four runs in the bottom half of the frame for the 5-4 win as Abi Corbett started things with a one out single to left field. Michala Wood would then bunt for a hit and Stewart would single home Corbett. Following a walk to Dru ColemanDakoda Owings (pinch running for Stewart) and Coleman would move up on a wild pitch before both scoring on a single just over the second baseman's head by Swadley.
Kali' Hodson got the start for the Lions going 4 1/3 innings allowing all four runs, all earned, on ten hits with two strike outs for the no decision. Shelby Mitchell (1-1) got the win in relief going 2 2/3 innings allowing just one Drury hit and striking out one.
Game two
In the night cap Drury struck first as the plated two runs in the top of the first inning as they scored on a fielding error by the Lions' shortstop and a double to right field. The Panthers tacked on another run, this one unearned, in the third for the 3-0 score.
Southern managed just three hits in the game as Alana Hester, Swadley and Lindsey Gorham all reached base on singles.
Ashley Lutz (2-7) threw the complete game for the Lions going seven innings while allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits with six strike outs.
On the Day
 Swadley was the leader offensively as she finished the day 4-for-5 for an average of .800 and three RBIs. Hester finished 2-for-5 for a .400 average with one walk and two stolen bases.
Mitchell was the leader in the circle as she finished with a 0.00 ERA in the 2 2/3 innings of work and an opponent batting average of .111.
Next Up
The Lions will be back in action this weekend as they travel to St. Joseph, Missouri to take part in the MWSU Apple Market Classic with two games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday against Central Regional opponents. Live stats for all six games can be found on www.mssulions.com.
