The Missouri Southern Lions softball team (1-9) dropped a pair of non-conference games at Pittsburg State (7-3) on Saturday afternoon 6-0 and 8-6.
In game one the Lions couldn't find the offense as they collected just one hit with 11 strike outs as they fell 6-0. The only hit for Southern was by Kathryn Goins-Osburn as she singled in the second inning.
Kali' Hodson suffered the loss for the Lions as she went the distance giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts.
In game two Southern's offense came alive as they scored five runs in the first inning. Alana Hester got the party started as she singled and stole second then scored on a RBI single by Brooke Swadley. Following a double by Michala Wood, Swadley scored on a fielder's choice by Myranda Stewart. Dru Coleman hit her second home run of the season, a three run shot, to clear the bases.
The Gorillas answered back in the home half as they plated three runs and took the lead in the third as they scored five runs.
Southern, trailing 8-5, had one last shot in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and back-to-back singles. Hodson would single home the Lions lone run that inning as she ripped a single to left that scored Goins-Osburn.
Sarah Williams got the start in the circle as she went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits. Shelby Mitchell (0-1) suffered the loss as she faced just three batters in the third allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits and a walk. Ashley Lutz came in and shut down the PSU offense as she finished the game giving up no hits while striking out three.
Southern will be back in action Wednesday March 11 as they host Arkansas Tech for a double header at Lea Kungle Field at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm.
