Lions staff limits COO to one hit in 5-0 win

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The 22nd ranked Missouri Southern pitching staff, led by starter Sean Goostree, limited the visiting College of the Ozarks Bobcats to just one hit and the Lions won 5-0 today at the MSSU Baseball Field.

Southern (16-1) got strong pitching today led by Goostree's six innings on the hill. He allowed just one hit, while striking out seven and walking two. Nick Pettus and Matt Harvey pitched perfect in relief as Pettus went two, striking out four and Harvey struck out the side in the ninth.

CofO (9-5) picked up its lone hit in the second as JD Payne singled up the middle to lead off the inning.

The Lions scored runs in the first and the second. Tee Helsel scored an unearned run in the first, while Robbe Ewing singled home Richie Gorski in the second.

The Lions added another run in the fourth on a Chad Shannon RBI and picked up two unearned in the eighth.

Shannon and Helsel both had a pair of hits for the Lions as Axel Johnson, Gorski and Ewing had a hit each.

With rain forecasted for most of the day tomorrow, the games with Pittsburg State have been postponed, however, a makeup date has not yet been announced. The Lions will play host to Central Missouri this weekend, starting with a game on Friday at 6 pm.
