The Missouri Southern baseball team dropped both ends of a double-header today to visiting Northeastern State as the Lions fell 11-2 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
The Lions (20-18, 14-16 MIAA) got on board first in the opener as Southern worked a delayed steal from Jared Lupo to get Evin Natick to score from third on a stolen base of his own.
Northeastern State (18-20, 14-16 MIAA) broke the game open with five runs in the third inning, only two of which were earned.
Southern scored a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Dusty Harper, scoring Mitchell Osburn.
NSU added two in the sixth and four in the seventh to put the game away.
David Reese started for the Lions and went five innings. He struck out seven, walked one and allowed just two earned runs. Kanon Hoover, Ryan Spry and Sean Goostree all pitched in relief.
Southern had hits from Natick, Logan Moon and Harper as NSU starter Ryan Helsley limited the Lions to three hits.
The Lions got a run across in the first in game two, as well on an RBI from Moon, scoring Natick.
Northeastern added two runs in the fourth and the fifth, before Southern answered back with a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Moon, and another run in the sixth on an RBI from Osburn.
The RiverHawks added an insurance run in the ninth to put the game away.
Payton Walker started and went seven and two thirds, striking out four and walking just one. He allowed four runs and took the loss, moving his record to 5-3 on the season. Stephen Vaughn threw an inning and a third in relief.
Matt Smith went 3-4 in the game, while both Natick and Moon had two hits each. Moon drove in a pair and Natick scored once. Brandon Weller and Austin White scored a run of their own.
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow with a double-header with NSU beginning at 1 pm from Joe Becker Stadium.
