The St. Louis Cardinals activated infielder Mark Ellis from the disabled list today and demoted last year's starting shortstop, Pete Kozma, to Triple A Memphis, where he will receive more playing time and be available as insurance for new shortstop Jhonny Peralta.
Ellis, 36, who played for the Dodgers in 2013, was signed in the off-season to provide the Cards with a strong righthanded bat off the bench. He is also expected to spell second baseman Kolten Wong and third baseman Matt Carpenter on occasion.
