MSSU softball sweeps Lindenwood 6-1, 8-0

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Behind complete game outings from pitchers Sarah Williams and Haley Kinnison, the Missouri Southern softball team swept the Lindenwood Lady Lions this afternoon at Lea Kungle Field taking game one 6-1 and winning game two 8-0 in six innings.
The Lions (12-24, 4-8 MIAA) were led at the plate by sophomore shortstop Michala Wood who went 5-for-8 with a double, triple and three runs scored to push her season average over .300 as she is now hitting .304 on the season. Shelby Romines had a great pair of games going 4-for-7 with a double, three RBI's and two runs scored. Kathryn Goins and Jessica Castoe also had three hits in the two games as Goins hit a grand slam, her third home run of the season in game two, and drove in six runs on the day.
Southern got the action started early in game one as they tagged Lindenwood's starter Brooke Miller with one run in the first on a double to right center by Romines and tacked on two more in the second on a Jessica Castoe single to left field and a double by Wood to right center to give the Lions a 3-0 lead and chase Miller from the game.
After a scoreless third, Lindenwood (12-17, 6-8) got on the board in the fourth on a double to left field, but Southern shut down any comeback effort by the Lady Lions adding three runs in the fifth to take a comfortable 6-1 lead as Williams cruised to the complete game win, her fourth of the year, as she allowed seven hits, one earned run and struck out a season-high six batters.
The Lions continued their strong day from the plate in game two as they once again scored early and often plating five runs in the first inning on a single by Romines before Goins came up with the bases loaded as she cranked a grand slam to center field scoring Alexah ReplogleDawn Grass and Romines.
Southern added a run in the second on a Romines single up the middle, one more in the fifth on a Brooke Swadley double to left field and finally ended the game in the sixth as Goins singled to right plating pinch-runner Shelby Mitchell to give Southern the 8-0 win in six innings. Kinnison picked up her seventh win of the year as she hurled six innings of shutout ball allowing only four hits and struck out eight as she know has 72 strikeouts on the year.
Southern returns to action at home on Saturday taking on #7 Emporia State (30-7, 10-0) at 1 p.m. at Lea Kungle Field.
