Contract offers expected for Descalso, Jay, but none for Axford

Former Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford was a steady performer during the last couple of the months of the 2013 season for the St. Louis, but MLB.com reports the Cardinals are unlikely to offer him a contract by tonight's deadline.

John Jay and Daniel Descalso, the Cardinals' other arbitration-eligible players are expected to receive offers.

Three other St. Louis players had been eligible for arbitation. Two, David Freese and Fernando Salas, were traded to the Los Angeles Angels, while the third, backup catcher Rob Johnson, was taken off the 40-man roster.
