Southern women fall to Southwest Baptist 83-78

Southwest Baptist went on a 13-7 run over the final two minutes of the game Thursday night to defeat the Missouri Southern women's basketball team 83-78 at the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
Southern (14-4, 8-3 MIAA) had four score in double-figures led by 18 points from Sharese Jones on 7-12 shooting from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Jones added seven rebounds and three assists.Shonte Clay scored 15 and added six boards, while Samantha Soyez scored 12 and Alexis Fitzpatrick added ten. 
SBU (9-9, 4-7 MIAA) had four score in double-figures led by 23 points from Brook Duncan on 7-10 shooting from the floor and 5-8 from long-range. 
The Bearcats started strong and led 9-4 early on, but the Lions got to within one (9-8) after a bucket from Jones with 15:52 left in the first half and went ahead 11-9 after after a three from Singleton the next trip down the court. Southern went on fire after that and led 25-15 after a 17-4 run was capped off by a pair of freebies from Jones with 9:11 left in the half. 
SBU answered back, however, and the Bearcats hit threes on six of their next 11 possessions and took a 35-34 lead with 2:15 left to go in the half. A three from Soyez, her second of the half, would give the Lions the lead back (37-35) on the next trip down, and that would be the halftime score as neither team scored in the final two minutes. Jones led the Lions with 14 points on 5-9 shooting from the field as Southern held a 22-4 advantage in the paint. 
Southern started the second half with five-straight points, a three from Fitzpatrick and a fast-break layup from Phillips, forcing an SBU timeout. The Bearcats answered back with a 9-3 run of their own to cut the Lions' lead to one (45-44) at the first media timeout. 
A layup from SBU's Morgan Lucy tied the score at 51 with just under 12 minutes left, and a free-throw from Leann Lansdown with 11:04 gave the Bearcats a 52-51 lead. A freebie from Soyez tied the game with 10:20 left, one from Dominique Mosley with 9:28 left gave Southern a 53-52 lead. Both teams traded leads for the next seven minutes before SBU went on an 8-0 run, capped off by a pair of free-throws from Alex Botkin to take a 78-71 lead with 43.8 seconds to go. The Bearcats would hold on for the win down the stretch. 
The Lions out scored SBU 36-18 in the paint and had a 32-30 advantage in rebounds. Southern forced 20 SBU turnovers and scored 25 points off of the miscues and the Lions had 16 assists on 25 made baskets. 
Southern will be back in action this Saturday when the Lions travel to Central Missouri to take on the Jennies. Tip off from the Multipurpose Building is slated for 1:30 pm.
