A layup from Northwest Missouri's DeShaun Cooper with 3.3 seconds left proved to be the game-winner as the Bearcats came-from-behind and defeated the No. 22 Missouri Southern men's basketball team 79-78 tonight inside Bearcat Arena.
Southern (13-3, 7-2 MIAA) had three score in double-figures led by 17 points from Lane Barlow on 7-10 shooting. Marquis Addison scored 16 on 5-9 from the field and Jordan Talbert added 14 points and eight rebounds. Greg Renfroe scored seven points and added nine rebounds.
Northwest (14-5, 9-1 MIAA) was led in scoring by 32 points from Cooper on 9-10 shooting and 5-10 from long-range. He went 9-10 from the charity stripe, while Dillon Starzl scored 17 and Bryston Williams added 11.
The Lions led 11-10 with 15:05 left in the first after a layup from Slim Magee and a three pointer from Austin Wright three minutes later gave the Lions a 19-10 lead. The Southern lead was 10 (31-21) after a layup fromCameron Cornelius with 5:47 left in the half, and after Northwest cut the lead to just six (38-32) with 1:22 left, four-straight points from the Lions gave Southern a 42-32 lead going into the locker room.
Northwest cut the Lions' lead to seven (42-35) after a layup from Williams, just a minute and a half into the second half, but the Lions pushed their lead back to 13 (48-35) after a layup from Talbert with 17:47 left. The Bearcats cut the lead to six (52-46) with 15:01 left, but a jumper from Talbert with 12:15 left gave the Lions back an 11-point advantage at 59-48.
The Bearcats cut the lead to three (66-63) after a layup from Conner Crooker with 7:11 left in the game, and a layup from Williams with 6:01 left made the score 66-65. A pair of free-throws at 3:59 from the Bearcats' Cooper tied the game at 71, and the teams traded points the next few trips down the court, but a three-point play from Lane Barlow gave the Lions a 76-75 lead with 2:15 left. A pair of free-throws from Talbert gave the Lions a 78-77 lead with under a minute to go, but Cooper's layup proved to be the game-winner.
Southern shot 46 percent from the field in the game and 82 percent from the free-throw line. The Lions had a 38-29 advantage on the boards and held a 12-3 advantage on second-chance points.
Southern will look to rebound as the Lions will play host to Missouri Western on Saturday at 3 pm from the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
