Winning their fifth straight game and staying unbeaten at home, the Missouri Southern Lions women's basketball team powered past the Missouri Western Griffons 65-50 this afternoon at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Wearing pink jerseys to raise money for breast cancer research, the Lions (14-3, 8-2 MIAA) were led in scoring by Dominique Mosley who finished with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field as they improved to 10-0 at L&P this year. Two other Lions finished in double figures as Shonte Clay and Sharese Jones added 10 points apiece. Samantha Soyez added seven points and a game-high six assists, while Kristen Hanna scored a season-high six points.
The Griffons (7-10, 2-8) were led in scoring by Jallisa Lewis and Tiara Hall who each finished with nine points. Tiffanie Abrams chipped in eight points as Lewis and Hall combined to grab 16 boards. The Lions held Western to a 26.3% (15-57) clip from the field, a season-low for a Lion opponent.
With neither team able to find much offense to start the game, Southern held a 11-8 lead after the first nine minutes of play. The Lions continued to build their lead throughout the first half going up by as many as seven after a jumper from Hanna with 2:39 to play in the first half. Shooting 50% from the field in the first half, Southern took a 27-22 lead into the halftime break after Western sank a three-pointer at the buzzer.
After Southern scored 10 of the first 15 points of the second half to take a 37-27 lead, Western hung tough with a 6-0 run to cut Southern's lead to 37-33. The Lions responded with a 9-1 run capped by a layup from Nicole Hartzog with 8:07 to go to take a 46-34 advantage. After a pair of free throws by Western's Lewis cut Southern's lead to 49-44 with 5:30 to go, the Lions finished the game on a 16-6 run to win by a final of 65-50. That final run by Southern featured scores by five Lions led by five points from Alexis Fitzpatrick and four from Molsey.
Two game after shooting a season-best 64.8% from the field against Lincoln, the Lions nearly matched that output as they shot 61.8% (21-34) from the field, including going 11-of-14 in the second half. The Lions went 20-of-28 (.714) from the from free-throw line, including 14-of-20 in the seond half. Southern also held a 12-4 edge in assists and 32-18 points in the paint.
Southern returns to action on the road on Thursday as they travel to Southwest Baptist (8-9, 3-7) to face the Bearcats at 5:30 p.m. at the Meyer Sports Center.
