The No. 22 Missouri Southern basketball team had a career-high 28 points from Greg Renfroe and the Lions shot 68 percent from the field, defeating visiting Missouri Western 105-71 inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (14-3, 8-2 MIAA) shot 78 percent from the field in the second half and 73 percent from long range in the game. Renfroe went 10-12 from the field in the game and 8-9 from the free-throw line. Marquis Addisonfinished the game with 14 points and seven rebounds, moving in front of Terry Shumpert for 9th place all-time in MSSU scoring history with 1,390 points. Cameron Cornelius had 13 points, while Slim Magee scored 12 and Lane Barlow added 10 points and six assists. Jordan Talbert scored eight points and added eight rebounds, six assists and five blocks.
Western (8-10, 3-7 MIAA) had four score in double-figures led by 14 points from Ryan Devers.
The Griffons scored the game's first points on a three from Hans Thun, but the Lions answered right back with a pair of three's from Addison and a dunk and a layup from Renfroe to go up 12-3 at the 17 minute mark of the half. Western utilized 12-5 run mid-way through the half to cut the Lions' lead to just three (29-26), but the Lions answered with a 16-0 run and went up 45-26 after a three from Addison with 3:13 left in the first. Southern went into the locker room with a 55-33 advantage.
The Lions' lead reached 31 after a layup from Cornelius made the secore 73-42 with 13:56 left to go in the game. The lead was 41 (98-57) after a layup from Magee with 3:47 left and a three from Morgan Smith put the Lions over the century mark (101-64) with 1:58 to go.
The Lions out-rebounded Western 42-23 in the game and had a 48-32 advantage in the paint. Southern shot 73 percent from the free-throw line and had 21 assists on 34 made baskets.
The Lions will be back in action on Thursday evening, when Southern travels to Bolivar to take on Southwest Baptist. Tip off from the Meyer Sports Center is slated for 7:30 PM.
