Cardinals looking for second baseman

Hold off for a little bit before you hand over the Cardinals' second base job to rookie Kolten Wong.

The highly-touted Wong, who so far is best known unfortunately for being picked off first base during the World Series is still likely to be the second baseman with last year's occupant of that position, Matt Carpenter, heading toward his natural position of third base, which has been freed up by the trading of 2011 Series hero David Freese.

But general manager John Mozeliak has indicated he is looking for a second baseman who can hit lefthanded pitching.

Otherwise, the Cardinals appear just about finished with their shopping since they landed outfielder Peter Bournos in the Freese deal and signed free agent shortshop Jhonny Peralta.

With Carlos Beltran leaving for free agency, contract offers not extended to Edward Mujica or John Axford and the salaries of Rafael Furcal and Chris Carpenter off the books, the Cardinals are in good shape to find a hitter for their bench and also pay a little extra to holdovers John Jay and Daniel Descalso.
