Rachel Ray was named the EO and Virginia Humphrey Award winner, while Cam Martin and Jasmine Deckard were named the Male and Female Athletes of the Year at the annual Student-Athlete Award Banquet tonight on the campus of Missouri Southern.
Ray, a senior from Alma, Ark. carries a 4.00 GPA in kinesiology at Southern and is a member of the Lions' track and field team. She earns the Humphrey Award as the top overall student-athlete at Southern that embodies the characteristics not only of a top athlete, but as a student and a member of the community. A sprinter, Ray was the President of the Missouri Southern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) this year and helped lead a contingent of student-athletes that had more than 5,000 hours of community service in the Joplin area this year.
Ray was a Glen Dolence and Spencer Bartlett Award winner at MSSU and served as a team captain this year. She is a member of the school-record holding 4x400m relay team and was an All-MIAA selection this year helping that relay team to a top-three finish at the MIAA Indoor Championships. Ray has been an MIAA Scholar-Athlete and a Presidential Scholar winner, as well as a member of the MSSU Dean's list.
Deckard, also a member of the Lions' track and field team, is a sophomore from Little Elm, Texas and is the school record holder in the indoor 60m, 200m and as a member of the 4x400m relay team. She also holds the outdoor 100m and 200m records. This year she was an All-American in the 60m and 200m during the indoor season, as well as being an All-MIAA selection in the 60m, 200m and the 4x400m relay. She scored 16 points by herself at the MIAA Indoor Championships and had NCAA automatic qualifying marks in the indoor season in both the 60m and 200m, as well as the 100m and 200m in the outdoor season, before her season was cut short by injury.
Martin proved to be one of the best players in the MIAA, the region and Division II this year. A first-team All-MIAA selection, Martin was also an All-Region and All-American selection. He became only the second Lion to ever score 700 or more points in a single season, joining Taevaunn Prince in that illustrious group. He was a member of the NCAA Central Region All-Tournament Team where he averaged 33.7 points and 12.7 rebounds, leading the Lions to a Sweet 16 appearance.
This season, Martin tied the MSSU single-game scoring record with 49 points, as well as the single-game three point record with nine. He led the MIAA in scoring, defensive rebounds, double-double's, free throw percentage, free throws made and attempted, total field goals made and total rebounds.
Each of the 16 programs award a team MVP, as well as give out the Lionbacker Award of Excellence. A complete list of each award is below.
