MSSU baseball posts shutout win over Northwest Missouri in MIAA Tournament opener

Pittsburg, Kan. -- Freddie Landers homered, Troy Gagan drove in two with a pair of doubles and Zach Parish went eight innings as the Missouri Southern baseball team defeated Northwest Missouri 4-0 today in the first round of the 2019 MIAA Baseball Tournament.

Southern (33-17) moves on to face Central Oklahoma in the second round tomorrow at 4 pm from Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg. The Bronchos defeated Lindenwood 3-1 in the first game of the tournament.

The Lions had two hits each from Landers Gagan and Ryan Hunter. Landers had a home run and scored twice, while Gagan had a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Hunter had a double off the wall in right center, while Denver Coffee and Matt Miller had a hit each. Coffee drove in a run, while Mike Million scored in the first.









Parish went eight innings, striking out eight and allowing just three hits in the combined shutout, his third of the season. Logan VanWey came in and threw a perfect ninth to complete the shutout.

Northwest (23-26) got hits from Peter Carlson, Matt Gastner and Logan Rycraft.

The Lions got the scoring in the first when Million was hit by a pitch and moved to third after a dobule from Landers. Gagan then hit a fly to right to score Million.

Landers homered in the sixth to put the Lions up 2-0, while Gagan drove in Landers with a double in the eighth and Coffee followed suit with an RBI double of his own to score Gagan.

Southern will be back at it tomorrow afternoon with a 4 pm game against Central Oklahoma. The Lions will be the home team on the scoreboard. Southern swept the series with the Bronchos earlier in the season.
