(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

New Orleans, La. -- For the fifth time in the last six years, the Missouri Southern men's track and field and cross country program is the top program in the MIAA as the Lions finished eighth in the final United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Program of the Year standings released today.

Teams earn points based on NCAA finishes in the cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

Southern finished 11th in the 2018 Division II Cross Country National Championships, while the indoor and outdoor track and field teams finished 25th and 24th, respectively at the NCAA Championships.

The Lions are the only team from the MIAA team in the top-17 this year, after finishing seventh last season. Southern finished 9th in 2013-14 and 7th in 2014-15. There were no MIAA teams in the top ten in 2015-16 and the Lions had the program's top finish ever with a 3rd-place finish in 2016-2017.

This year, the Lions were led during cross country by the MIAA and Central Regional Champion in freshman Gidieon Kimutai. Kimutai went on to finish fourth nationally at the Division II Cross Country Championships. Kimutai and his coach, Jamie Burnham, were named the Regional Athlete and Coach of the year, while Burnham also earned MIAA Coach of the Year honors. Southern recently posted four All-American performances at the 2019 Outdoor Nationals, while the Lions had a pair of All-Americans in the indoor season.
