Late runs lift MSSU baseball to 7-3 win over Lindenwood in regular season finale

St. Charles, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team scored five unanswered runs over the final three innings to defeat Lindenwood 7-3 today in the regular-season finale.

Southern (32-17, 23-10 MIAA) will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MIAA Baseball Tournament and will take on No. 7 seed Northwest Missouri at 12:30 pm on Thursday, May 9 in the first round of the tournament.

Jon Leighton went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and a run scored, while Mike Million was 2-for-4 with three runs, a home run and an RBI. Freddie Landers had a home run, while Dexter Swims had a hit and two runs scored. Alex Phillips and Denver Coffee had a hit each, as well, while Troy Gagan and Phillips drove in one run each.








Zac Shoemaker started and went six innings, striking out three and moving to 7-2 on the season. Joey Reeves threw two and a thirds in relief, while Logan VanWey got the final two outs for the save, his third of the year.

Lindenwood, 27-23, 18-15 MIAA) had three with two hits each.

Landers got the Lions on top first with a home run in the first inning. Lindenwood went up 3-1 after four innings, before Million's homer in the fifth got the Lions within one (3-2).

Leighton doubled home Million and Swims to put the Lions on top 4-3 in the seventh and picked up another RBI double in the ninth, this time scoring Swims. Gagan and Phillips drove in runs behind Leighton in the ninth to secure the win.

Southern will be back in action on Thursday, May 9 taking on Northwest Missouri in the first round of the MIAA Tournament from Pittsburg.
