MSSU women in first after second day of MIAA championships

Warrensburg, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern women's track and field team is in first-place heading into the final day of the meet as the Lions competed in day two at the 2019 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday inside Walton Stadium.

The Lions had six All-MIAA performances and three event champions in the first day of the meet. The Lions are in first place with 69 points, 26 points in front of second-place Pittsburg State.

Desirea Buerge won both events she competed in today, with wins in the discus and the shot. Buerge won the discus to start things off with a throw of 182-02, just shy of her own school record in the event, while Payton Roberts was third to also earn All-MIAA honors. Alexandra Rodriguez was seventh and Kirsten Leisenger was eighth, each earning points for Southern in the event. Buerge then went on to win the shot put with a heave of 52-06.75. Roberts was fifth in the event.








Claire Luallen started the day in the lead in the heptathlon and led by 17 points going into the final event, the 800m. However, Luallen just missed out on the championship, finishing as the runner-up with 4,878 points to earn All-MIAA honors. Miracle Grant was tenth in the event.

Emily Presley won another MIAA Championship in the pole vault, her fifth overall pole vault championship and her third in the outdoor ranks, as she vaulted to a height of 13-10.50. Jordan Banker was third in the event to earn All-MIAA honors with a height of 12-06.75, while Samantha Petry (5th) and Elena Bisotto (6th) also picked up points for the Lions.

Ojurere Shonekan was 23rd in the long jump with a distance of 16-11.25, while Julianna Determan was fourth in the 10k, finishing in a time of 37:24.08 and Alice Evans was 11th. 








In the prelims, the Lions will send two to the finals of the 100m hurdles as Morgan Smith was third and Elizabeth Adeoye qualified sixth. The pair also qualified for the finals of the 400m hurdles with Rachel Ray joining in.

The Lions will conclude the championships today with field events in the javelin, high jump and the hammer throw, as well as the finals of the running events.
