MSSU volleyball picked ninth in pre-season poll

The Missouri Southern volleyball team has been picked 9th in the MIAA preseason coaches poll the league announced today. 

The Lions finished last season 11-20 overall and 4-14 in the MIAA, finishing 9th in the final standings. Southern welcomes in a new coaching staff in head coach Kalie Mader and assistant Abolanle Onipede. Mader comes to the Lions after a successful stint at Blinn College in Texas, while Onipede played for Mader at Blinn and went on to finish her career at the University of Alabama. 

The Lions return three All-MIAA players in Alicia Pickett, Janelle Brehm and Morgan Nash to the squad. The trio helped the Lions to the program's best overall record since 2010 and the best conference finish since 2011. The team ranked fifth in the league in total blocks and 32nd nationally.

Nebraska-Kearney was the preseason favorite to win the league, earning eight of the 11 first-place votes (one coach did not fill out a ballot). Missouri Western was second with two first-place votes, followed closely by Central Oklahoma at fourth and Central Missouri at fifth. Washburn picked up the other first-place vote and was sixth, followed by Northwest Missouri, Emporia State, Southern, Pittsburg State, Fort Hays State and Southwest Baptist to round out the poll. The Lions begin the 2018 season next weekend, competing in the Peggy Martin Classic at the University of Central Missouri.
