The Missouri Southern soccer team has been picked sixth in the 2018 Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Coaches Preseason Poll the league announced Monday morning.
The Lions, who were picked 11th in 2017, finished 5-9-4, earning the program's first MIAA tournament appearance since 2012 and placed fifth in the final MIAA standings.
The team brings back a veteran group of four seniors in Jeannine Escobar, Julia Liberty, Maria Sturluson, and Denine Tahbaz to go along with six juniors and ten sophomores that all contributed to produce eight matches of not allowing a goal, which includes forcing Fort Hays State into penalty kicks to close out the first round of postseason play last year.
Defending NCAA and MIAA champions Central Missouri led the poll with 121 points with all but one first-place vote. Missouri Western received the other first-place vote while accumulating 108 points at the number two spot.
August 31 marks the first official match as the team travels to Kansas City to face Rockhurst University at 6:30 pm. Then take on Drury on Sept. 2 at 7 pm before playing its first home match inside Hal Bodon Field against Harding University on Sept. 7 at 6:00 pm.
