MSSU soccer downs Missouri S&T 4-2

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern soccer team scored four goals on the night toward a 4-2 victory over the Missouri S&T Miners inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium Friday evening.

The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a straight-away goal by sophomore Carina Calderon at the 22:59 mark of the first period. MS&T responded a couple moments later with a goal to tie it up at 1-1.

Then with three minutes left in the first period, senior center-mid Alex McCord found the ball during a scramble within the box off a corner kick and just loaded up right in front to give the Lions the lead back (2-1) heading into the second period.

Calderon added another goal at the 40-minute mark in the second period to put the Lions in front by two, followed up with a goal by Julia Liberty from 20 yards away to close out the scoring as the defense limited the Miners to zero goals despite allowing nine shots in the third and final period.

Southern opens the regular season on the road in Kansas City to face Rockhurst University on Aug. 31 at 6:30 pm.
