Kansas City, Mo. - The Missouri Southern women's soccer team found itself down a goal at the half, but was able to get in position for a score to tie the game five minutes into the second period to kick off the first match of the season with a tie (1-1) versus Rockhurst inside Bourke Field Friday evening.
The Lions' (0-0-1) goal came after Carina Calderon took two dribbles past the blue line into the Hawks zone and launched one that ricocheted in-between freshman Bailey Belcher and a defender. It then landed in front of senior Julia Liberty who came forward a couple steps and poked it in the right corner for a 1-1 tied in the 51st minute of the match.
RU (0-0-1) got on the board first when Ellie Guttman secured the rebound in front of the net and sent the ball right back to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the first period upon MSSU's goalkeeper Luz Galindo making the initial save off a free kick by Cathy Rometti.
Galindo recorded 110 minutes between the posts, seeing 25 total shot attempts and making 10 saves on 11 shots faced. Southern as a team took 11 shots, but played lockdown defense in the second half to force the end result.
Lions head to Springfield on Sunday, Sept. 2nd to face Drury University inside the Curry Sports Complex - Harrison Stadium at 7:00 pm.
