The Missouri Southern women's basketball team held off a late run from visiting Southwest Baptist and the Lions took out the Bearcats 82-79 today on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (11-5, 3-3 MIAA) was led by 24 points from Chasidee Owens. She was 7-of-10 from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Chelsey Henry scored 18 and had 10 rebounds, while Destiny Cozart added 12 points. Laure Assena and Layne Skiles had nine points each.
SBU (4-11, 0-6 MIAA) had five score in double-figures, led by 20 points from Caylee Richardson.
The Bearcats jumped out to an 11-4 lead with 6:47 left in the first quarter and led 13-9 with 4:42 to go, but a pair of free throws from Assena gave the Lions a 14-13 lead with 3:28 on the clock. SBU led 17-16 with two minutes to go, but the Lions went on a 4-0 run and led 20-19 after one.
A three-point play from Owens with 8:20 to go in the 2ndquarter gave the Lions a 28-23 lead and a layup from Henry with 7:20 to go pushed the lead to seven (30-23). A three from Skiles the next trip down gave the Lions a 33-23 lead. The Southern lead was seven (37-30) late in the second quarter, but a pair of freebies from Owens with 2:34 to go pushed the lead to nine (39-30). SBU cut the lead to four (39-35) with a layup in the final seconds, but Cozart hit a long three as time expired to give the Lions a 42-35 lead at the break.
SBU made two threes early in the third quarter to get within three (44-41) with just under nine minutes to go and a pair of freebies for the Bearcats got SBU within one (44-43) with 8:26 to go. A three from Chelsey Henry with 4:19 to go in the third, pushed the Lions' lead back to nine (55-46), and a bucket from Assena with 3:35 to go made the lead 11 (57-46).
A bucket from Skiles with 7:31 left in the fourth pushed the Lions' lead to 14 (69-55), and the Lions led 74-62 with 5:30 to go in the fourth, but SBU rattled off a 15-4 run to get within one (78-77) with a little over a minute to go.
A layup from the Bearcats put SBU up 79-78 with 37 seconds left and forced a Lions' timeout. Owens converted a pair of freebies to give the Lions an 80-79 lead with 27 seconds left and a defensive stop by the Lions the next trip down gave Southern the ball with 18.5 seconds left. Southern made a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 82-79 and a tough defensive stand the next trip down sealed the win.
The Lions shot 45 percent from the field and 86 percent from the free throw line. Southern forced 14 SBU turnovers and scored 18 points off the miscues. The Lions had a 39-33 advantage on the boards, including 10-8 on the offensive end, leading to a 15-9 advantage in second-chance points.
Southern will be back in action on January 17 as the Lions travel to Northeastern State. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 pm.
