The Missouri Southern women's basketball team nearly pulled off the upset, but came up just short, falling 70-67 to 19th-ranked Central Missouri tonight on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (10-5, 2-3 MIAA) was led by Chelsey Henry as the senior scored 20 points and added four rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes of play. Destiny Cozart had 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, 5-of-8 from long-range, while she added five rebounds and three assists.
Central (10-3, 3-2 MIAA) had three score in double-figures, led by 18 from Paige Redmond. Kim Crown scored 17, while Magan Skaggs added 16.
The Jennies jumped out to a 7-2 early lead with 7:44 left, but Southern came right back and took a 10-9 lead after a three from Cozart with 5:30 to go in the quarter. The Lions led 18-14 with just under two minutes to go in the quarter and after the Jennies had tied the game at 18, Southern closed the quarter on a 5-0 run, capped by a three from Henry to give the Lions a 23-18 lead after one.
A basket from Kim Crown off an assist from Redmond with 5:40 left in the 2nd quarter gave Central a 28-26 lead, but a layup from Amber Buch the next trip down tied the game at 28. A three from Payton Taylor with three minutes to go in the half put the Jennies up 34-28, and the Jennies would lead the Lions, 38-32 at the break.
A three-point play from Buch with 6:49 left in the 3rd got the Lions within two (40-38) and a layup from Henry with six to go, tied the game at 40. Central led 50-45 after a pair of free throws from Redmond with 1:12 left and a bucket from Laure Assena cut the lead to three 50-47 after three.
The Central lead was six (53-47) with 8:07 left in the 4th, but a three from Buch got the Lions within three at 53-50 with 7:19 to go. A pair of three's from Cozart, the later coming with 3:30 left in regulation got Southern within two (60-58). Another three from Cozart, this time with 1:56 left on the clock got the Lions within one (64-63), while Southern forced a turnover with 25 seconds on the clock, trailing 67-63, and Cozart hit, yet another three, to get the Lions within one again (67-66) with 23 seconds on the clock.
Central got the ball back and Redmond hit two free throws to push the Jennies' lead to 69-66 with 17.6 seconds left. Henry made one of two free throws to make the score 69-67 and Central made a freebie to seal the win.
The Lions shot 46 percent from the field and 48 percent from long-range. The Lions forced 17 Central Missouri turnovers, scoring 21 points off the miscues.
Southern will be back on action on Saturday when the Lions play host to Southwest Baptist. Tip off is slated for 1:30 pm.
