MSSU men's, women's indoor track and field picked fourth in MIAA poll

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern men's and women's indoor track and field teams have been picked to finish fourth in the MIAA preseason indoor track and field polls, the league announced today.

Both squads finished fourth at last year's MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The women went on to finish 11th and the men were 16th at the 2018 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Pittsburg, Kan.

The two programs combined for seven All-American performances at last year's NCAA Championships, led by a National Championship in the pole vault from Emily Presley. At the MIAA Championships, the Lions broke eight school records and had 11 All-MIAA performances, as well as four champions. Kennan Harrison was the champion in the triple jump and Presley won the pole vault. Bissoto (pole vault) and Jon Johnson are also returning All-MIAA performers.

The Southern men picked up 89 points, just in front of Lincoln for fourth place. Pittsburg State was a unanimous choice as preseason league favorite. Central Missouri was picked second, followed by Emporia State, the Lions, Lincoln, Fort Hays State, Nebraska-Kearney, Northwest Missouri, Washburn, Lindenwood, Southwest Baptist and Missouri Western to round out the men's poll.

The Southern women tied with Lincoln for fourth in the poll with 110 points. Pittsburg State had all but one of the possible first-place votes and was tabbed as the league favorite. Central Missouri was second, followed by Southwest Baptist, the Lions, Lincoln, Northwest Missouri, Fort Hays State, Nebraska-Kearney, Lindenwood, Washburn, Emporia State, Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western to round out the women's poll.

Both teams have one indoor meet already under their belts, having competed at Pittsburg State in December. The Lions will be in action next weekend as they compete at Northwest Missouri on Friday and Saturday.
