MSSU soccer falls 2-0 in season opener

(From MSSU Lions Athletics)

The Missouri Southern Lions opened their 2014 season with a 2-0 loss to Drury University at Harrison Stadium Thursday night.

The Lions (0-1) were unable to find the net during the 90 minutes of play despite seven shots from the offensive side of the ball. Freshman Taylor Beck led the way with three shots while fellow freshman Hannah Bomarregistered two. The best scoring chance for the Lions came with five minutes to play as freshman Aubrey Lindseyconnected on her first shot of her collegiate career on a pass from junior Karley Thomas.

Drury would strike first after a scoreless first half as Mariah Gove curved a corner kick into the back of the net in the 48th minute. Emma Huggett would then add the Panthers' second goal coming off a corner kick on the left side in the 68th minute.

Senior Beth Hammons played all 90 minutes in the net for the Green & Gold as she recorded nine saves in just allowing the two goals. In the first half Hammons would make a spectacular stop in the 15th minute as she denied the Panthers on a corner kick by Gove.

The Lions will be back in action this Saturday as they travel back to Springfield to take on the Miners of Missouri S&T. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 pm. You can follow the game through live stats at www.mssulions.com
