The Missouri Southern volleyball team won the first set in convincing fashion, but visiting Northwest Missouri came-from-behind to defeat the Lions three sets to one at Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 25-16, 24-26, 13-25, 15-25.
The Lions (4-10, 1-5 MIAA) and Bearcats (6-8, 3-3 MIAA) traded points early on in the first set, but Southern took a 12-10 lead on an ace from Katie Politte midway through the set. The Lions led 19-13, before a point from Northwest, but Southern scored six of the final eight points to take the set.
Both teams traded points in the second set, but Northwest took a 20-17 lead after a kill from Shelby Duren. The Lions got to within one at 22-21, forcing a Northwest timeout and a kill from Callie Whetstone gave Southern a 24-23 lead. Northwest, however, scored three-straight points to take the set.
Sets three and four were all Northwest with only five ties and three lead changes in the last two frames. In the match, there were 22 tied scores and eight lead changes.
Krishna Merriman led the Lions with 15 kills, while Whestone had 12 kills and 11 blocks. Politte had 11 kills, while Abby Finder dished out 36 assists. Katie Wiele had a match-high 12 digs.
The Lions had 12.5 blocks as a team in the match. Duren led Northwest with 15 kills.
Southern will be back in action on October 3, traveling to Emporia State. First serve is slated for 7 pm.
