The Missouri Southern Lions (3-4-1, 1-3 MIAA) dropped a heartbreaker to visiting Fort Hays State (4-3-1, 2-1-1 MIAA), 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Hal Bodon Field.
The Tigers struck first in the 50th minute as Cenayda Guzman put a header by Hammons off of a corner kick. Southern would have three point blank chances to tie the game in the second half as FHSU goalie, Kristen Thompson, would come up with the saves.
Beck would take a shot in the 59th minute following a yellow card on Fort Hays and then again in the 60th minute. Junior Michaela Altvater had the Lions final chance in the 89th minute.
The Lions' offense took 12 shots on the day, led by freshmen Hannah Bomar and Taylor Beck with four each.
Senior goalkeeper Beth Hammons played all 90 minutes in the net allowing just the one goal and recorded eight saves while facing 17 FHSU shots.
Southern will be back in action Thursday October 2nd as they host Missouri Western at 7pm at Hal Bodon Field.
