MSSU soccer downs Missouri S&T

The Missouri Southern Lions (1-1) struck first as they scored two goal within ten minutes as the Lions defeated former MIAA rival Missouri S&T (0-1) 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Drury University.

The Lions took four shots in the first half, all on goal, and scored on three as they opened a 3-0 lead over the Miners in the first half. Senior Kelsey Haist started the scoring in the 4th minute, to give the Lions their first lead of the season at 1-0, as she connected off a pass from freshman Hannah Bomar and junior Karley Thomas. Bomar got in on the goal scoring action just about ten minutes later as she scored off a Miners turnover beating Kaitlyn Deister one-on-one to the near post. In the 28th minute freshman Aubrey Lindsey scored on a one timer from about 28 yards out that sailed over a leaping Deister.

The Miners started their comeback in the second half connecting on scores in the 56th and the 71st minute as they pulled within one at 3-2.

Senior Beth Hammons played all 90 minutes in goal as she faced just five shots on goal and recorded three saves for the Lions.

The Lions will be back in action Friday evening as they travel to Claremore, Okla. to take on Rogers State Hillcats with kickoff set for 6pm.
